Roach Problem in Hulmeville, PA? Call Anchor Pest Control, your local cockroach exterminator and control service.
Cockroaches are common pests in homes and commercial buildings, especially where there’s food, warmth, and moisture. In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, the most common species include German, American, and Oriental cockroaches. Cockroach problems often start when an infested item is accidentally brought into a home or building. Poor sanitation, such as leaving food out, dirty dishes, or clutter, can make the problem worse by giving roaches plenty to eat. Active mainly at night, they’re often found in kitchens, restaurants, and other areas with easy access to food. Instead of feeding on outdoor plants, roaches are drawn to everyday household items like food, paper, glue, and sponges. They hide in dark, warm, and moist places, such as behind appliances, under sinks, in cabinets, in wall voids, in pipes, in clutter, behind furniture, and even inside electronics.
Cockroaches are dangerous!
Cockroaches can cause major infestations and are quite unsanitary. They are a significant source of food contamination, leading to food poisoning, and have also been found to cause allergies in humans. Cockroaches frequently live in sewers, bringing these conditions with them as they migrate indoors. Pet food bowls are also an easy target for cockroaches, making them a health threat to your dog or cat. Cockroaches can bite humans, but it's highly unlikely. Although the odds are in your favor, there have been reported cases of cockroaches biting nails, eyelashes, and calloused skin on heels.

Common Cockroach Questions
What is the difference between German and American Roaches?
German cockroaches are small—about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long—with a tan to light-brown color. Even though they have wings, they don’t fly. You can recognize them by the two dark “racing stripes” on their backs. They’re most often found in kitchens and bathrooms, hanging around warm, humid spots like dishwashers, stoves, and sinks. They’re not picky eaters either—they’ll go after anything from food crumbs to soap, glue, and even toothpaste.
American cockroaches are much larger and reddish-brown or mahogany in color. Often called palmetto bugs or water bugs, they’re found across the U.S., and both males and females can fly once they reach adulthood. They tend to show up in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, sump pump rooms, and electrical rooms. They prefer warm temperatures between 70°–85°F and can’t survive extreme cold. Their diet is just as diverse, including beer, pet food, fermenting produce, and human food. Because they can carry pathogens, their presence is a public health concern.
What are Oriental Roaches?
Oriental cockroaches, or "water bugs," are large, shiny, dark brown or black cockroaches that prefer cool, damp areas like basements, crawl spaces, and sewers. They are about one inch long, and while males have wings, they cannot fly, and females have no wings. Oriental roaches are nocturnal and can transmit bacteria and diseases by spreading filth from unsanitary areas to food and surfaces.

How Can I Prevent Cockroaches?
The best way to keep cockroaches out of your home is to maintain good sanitation. Try to reduce clutter, especially cardboard and paper bags. Also, keep food stored away and regularly wipe down floors and counters. It also helps to seal any gaps around drain pipes under your kitchen and bathroom sinks so roaches can’t sneak in. If you start seeing cockroaches, it’s important to call a pest control professional right away. They won’t disappear on their own, and the problem can get worse fast.
Is the Cockroach Treatment Environmentally Friendly?
There are many eco-friendly options available for cockroach control. In addition, all products used by Anchor Pest Control are EPA registered for pest control use. Our highly trained pest control professionals follow all applicable label requirements in an effort to keep pets and humans.
