What is a yellowjacket, and what does it look like?
A Yellowjacket is an insect that has a wasp-like shape, a yellow and black head, and a patterned abdomen. Yellowjackets are highly social wasps commonly found throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Although they are mistaken for bees due to their similar yellow and black patterns, they can easily be identified due to the striking markings on their back. The social structure of yellowjackets is also similar to that of bees, with different “castes”, including workers, and a Queen.
What are the signs of a yellowjacket infestation?
Yellowjacket nests are easy to find because they have an impressive 4,000 workers. They are found mostly in the late summer, and because they are attracted to human food, they may be spotted in nearby homes or locations where people and food dwell.
Signs that you may have a yellowjacket infestation include:
Frequent Sightings: You’ll notice a significant number of yellowjackets repeatedly hovering in one area, often near the ground or along building structures.
Nest Openings: Yellowjackets commonly nest underground, in wall voids, or in hidden cavities. Look for small entry holes with a steady flow of insects coming and going.
Increased Aggression: Yellowjackets can become quite defensive if their nest is nearby. If you experience more frequent stings or notice the insects acting aggressively when you pass by certain spots, it could indicate a nest nearby.
Buzzing or Activity Near Structures: Sometimes, you may hear a low buzzing sound coming from behind walls or in other tight spaces if a colony grows indoors.
Are yellowjackets dangerous? Do yellowjackets sting?
Yellowjacket stings are serious. Because of their territorial nature, they are aggressive and will sting repeatedly. These insects cause approximately 500,000 hospital visits every year. To prevent attracting yellowjackets, keep garbage cans covered and avoid using sweet scents such as perfumes when outside. It’s generally wise to exercise caution around yellowjackets and seek out professional pest control right away if you suspect an active infestation near your home.
