Millipede Pest Control and Exterminator
What are millipedes, and what do they look like?
Millipedes are particularly striking due to their long and slender worm-like bodies. The name comes from the Latin language, and it literally means “a thousand legs.” Millipedes do not actually have a thousand legs, but their number might vary, depending on the individual or the type of millipede. These pests are widespread throughout the world, and they are commonly found in homes with gardens or backyards.
What are the signs of a millipede infestation?
Signs of a millipede infestation can include:
Frequent Sightings: Seeing numerous millipedes indoors, especially around entry points, basements, and damp areas. They’re often found near door frames, windows, or cracks in foundations as they enter, seeking moisture.
Moisture-Related Presence: Millipedes thrive in damp, humid conditions. If you’re noticing them more often after rain or in areas prone to excess moisture—like basements, crawl spaces, and bathrooms—it can be a sign that conditions are ideal for their presence.
Accumulations of Dead Millipedes: Finding small piles of curled-up, dried millipede bodies near walls, corners, or beneath objects can indicate they’re entering in large numbers and then dying once inside due to dry indoor conditions.
While millipedes don’t typically damage homes or harm people, their presence in large numbers can be a nuisance. Controlling moisture and sealing entry points often helps prevent or reduce an infestation.
Are millipedes dangerous?
Millipedes are not dangerous to humans or pets, but they can potentially damage leaves and garden grass since they can feed on plant matter. They do not bite or sting, and their primary defense mechanism is to curl up into a coil when disturbed. Some millipedes can secrete a mild irritating fluid if handled or crushed, which may cause slight skin irritation or a burning sensation, but this is not typically serious. Overall, millipedes are considered more of a nuisance than a threat.
