What is a stink bug, and what does it look like?
Stink bugs are usually relatively large insects with an oval or shield-like shape. They can produce a nasty odor, which seems to be a defense mechanism of sorts against predators. Since their body shape is flat, these bugs can slip through cracks and torn screens easily, and they are often found trying to get into homes during the winter months. As it gets colder, they try to get indoors and enjoy the heat of a home. They also love light and sun, and they are found during the day, lounging on sunny walls, or during the night, near electric lights.
A stink bug is a type of insect known for the foul-smelling odor it emits when threatened or crushed. These bugs are often shield-shaped, with broad, flat bodies that taper slightly at the head and typically measure about half an inch to three-quarters of an inch in length. While many species of stink bugs exist, one of the most common in North America is the brown marmorated stink bug, which has a mottled brown color.
Stink bugs are primarily plant feeders and can cause damage to crops, fruits, and ornamental plants by piercing and feeding on them, leaving behind discolored spots and deformities. When temperatures start to drop, some stink bug species seek shelter indoors, where they can become a nuisance. Although they are not harmful to humans in terms of bites or stings, their distinctive odor and presence can be unpleasant, prompting many homeowners to take steps to keep them out.
What are the signs of a stink bug infestation?
Signs of a stink bug infestation can include:
Frequent Sightings Indoors: Seeing multiple stink bugs, especially around windows, doors, and light fixtures, can indicate that they have found a way inside.
Congregation in Warm Areas: Stink bugs are attracted to warmth. If you notice them gathering on sunny exterior walls, window screens, or near attic vents, they may seek a place to overwinter.
Foul Odor: Stink bugs release a distinctive, unpleasant odor when disturbed or crushed. If you’re frequently noticing a strong, musty smell, it could mean they’re present in larger numbers.
Visible Entry Points: Cracks in window frames, gaps under doors, and openings in siding or utility lines can serve as entry routes. Spotting stink bugs near these areas could signal an infestation.
If you notice multiple signs, it’s likely that stink bugs are present in your home. Implementing proper sealing measures and contacting a professional pest control company may help manage and prevent further issues.
Are stink bugs dangerous?
While not particularly dangerous to humans, stink bugs can actually damage plants, fruit trees, and garden grass since they actually feed on fruit, berries, and grass. Their smell can also be offensive, especially when they die by getting too close to electric light sources, releasing a foul smell with their carcasses.
