American Dog Ticks are distinctive because of the oval shape of their bodies. They can usually grow up to 1/8 inches, but their size increases right after a meal because they become extremely engorged with the blood of their victim. These ticks are commonly found in suburban areas and in rural communities, especially around fields and in the woods. While they can be found on wild animals like mice, squirrels, and raccoons, they can also infest dogs and other domesticated animals, spending much time outdoors.
What are the signs of an American Dog Tick infestation?
American dog ticks primarily live and breed outdoors, so while they don’t form indoor “infestations” in the same way that some household pests do, you may still notice signs that they are present in your environment. Possible indicators include:
Frequent Ticks on Pets:
Finding multiple ticks attached to your dog or cat after being outside is a strong sign that American dog ticks are active in your yard or nearby areas.
Ticks on Clothing or Skin:
If you or your family members frequently discover ticks crawling on clothing or attached to the skin after spending time outdoors, it suggests a high local tick population.
Bites with Attached Ticks:
Noticing tick bites on humans or pets—often small, swollen spots where the tick is attached—indicates that these parasites are around.
Presence in Grassy or Brushy Areas:
American dog ticks typically quest (wait for hosts) in tall grass, brush, and along wooded edges. If you find ticks in these zones around your property, it’s a sign they’re well established there.
